Beginnings: A Testimony of Healing Miracles
Introduction
In the fall of 1999, the Lord told me to join a local Toastmasters club (where you practice giving short speeches, which usually last about 5 minutes each). In Toastmasters, each speech that you give is designed to help you work on a different aspect of public speaking, such as using gestures, pausing for effect, and so on. For each speech, I felt that the Lord was prompting me with something specific to speak on. Toastmasters is not a Christian organization, so it was a bold step to speak on a Christian subject such as this. However, I did it in obedience to the Lord and it is already bearing fruit in people's lives. Be bold for the Lord! This 5-minute speech describes some of the first healing miracles I saw when the Lord began teaching me about miracles and healing. The 5-Minute Speech
One evening several years ago I was driving to a home Bible study. Now, lately I had been feeling a desire welling up in me to be able to help people like Jesus did, by healing the sick. But I didn't know if that desire in my heart was put there by God, or if it was maybe unScriptural, so on the way to the Bible study I asked God for a confirmation if that desire was from Him. Nobody knew about this desire I was feeling, and I hadn't mentioned this prayer to anyone. Suddenly, about halfway through the evening, the leader of the Bible study suddenly stopped in mid-sentence, looked straight at me, pointed at me, and said these words: "That desire in your heart was put there by God!" Then he turned back and resumed his conversation. Well, I was in shock! God had exactly answered my prayer, and He was telling me to learn how to heal the sick! So on the way home I thanked Him and I said, "Okay, I will leave it up to You to teach me how to heal the sick." Soon after that, I was in a Christian bookstore, and one book immediately grabbed my attention. The name of the book was: "How to Heal the Sick." It turns out that the authors of this book have a Video Healing School. On this video, they said that when a person has upper back pain, one arm usually appears to be shorter than the other arm because something in the back is pulled or is out of alignment, causing the pain. My wife had had upper back pain for two years, and the doctors gave it a name and gave her some medication, but they couldn't do much else about it. So I rewound the video and wrote down exactly how they prayed for this type of problem on the video. Then my wife held her arms straight out in front of her, and sure enough, one arm looked shorter than the other. I literally just read that prayer that I had written down: "In Jesus' Name, something something something," [1] then I looked at her fingertips. Her shorter arm started moving...it appeared to be growing longer as God re-adjusted her back to release the pinched nerve! She wasn't doing it and I wasn't it doing it! When her arms were the same length, it stopped. My eyes were like this big. She tested her back, and she whispered in shock, "Dave, all the pain is gone!" That back pain that she had had for two years, which doctors couldn't do anything about, God had instantly, miraculously healed it right in front of our eyes! A couple of months later we were visiting my parents for Christmas. I told them about my wife's back being healed. Now, my mom had had an accident which damaged the TMJ joint in her jaws. She couldn't open her mouth wide enough to eat hot dogs or hamburgers and so on. My dad is a medical doctor, so I said, "Okay, dad, let's do a scientific experiment. Measure how wide mom can open her mouth." Personally, I can open my mouth a little over an inch and a half, but she could only open her mouth about an inch. So I laid hands on her jaw and I said, "In Jesus' Name, something something something," [1] then I said, "Okay, dad, measure her again." Instantly she could open her mouth about an inch and a half, just like me! God had instantly healed her and set her free from that pain and suffering! I think that shook my dad, because as a medical doctor he was skeptical of this healing stuff. He knew the nature and extent of my mom's injury, and he had verified her healing with his own eyes! For several years, my mom had had headaches by the end of the day, every day, after using her jaws for chewing and talking and so on throughout the day. In the last couple of years since God healed her, she hasn't had a single one of those daily headaches! A friend of the family named Harry was supposed to come over that evening. Now, Harry is a medical doctor, worked with my dad, and he was an atheist, didn't believe in God. Harry had recently found out that he had an aggressive form of cancer. He and my dad are both doctors, so they knew he had cancer. I laid hands on Harry, and he later went in for some more tests. There is not a trace of cancer in Harry's body! Harry is now a Christian, by the way! Those are just some of the first healing miracles I saw when God started teaching me about this, and I'm still seeing healing miracles to this day. Recently, my wife and I drove to a hospital in San Antonio because her dad had been in a car accident, and we laid hands on him. The next morning, the doctors canceled his surgery and said (in their words) that he had made a "miraculous recovery"! That's a medically-verified healing miracle! Now, don't get me wrong, not everyone I lay hands on gets healed. There are various reasons for that, and I don't have all the answers. But God is still teaching me new things! Of course, what you believe is your business. But here's the best part. See, I don't have any power, it's all God's power. Don't believe what I say, believe what God says! Take a look at John 14:11-12 sometime. Jesus said that anyone with faith in Him can do the same miracles that He did. I'm an "anyone," right? You're an "anyone," right? Do you see that? So if we have faith in Him then we can lay hands on the sick and expect to see healing miracles to point people to Jesus.
