Fun, Free Pocket PC Games

and Handy Utilities

Recently I bought an HP iPAQ (running Windows Mobile 5) off of eBay, and now I wish I had bought one years ago! Using a text editor or Pocket Word helps me stay on top of my to-do list because I can move items around as their priorities change, and my kids and I are having fun downloading and playing lots of free games.

My nine-year-old daughter (Stephanie) designed this website of Pocket PC utilities and games that we like. We haven't tried every Pocket PC game or utility out there, but these are our favorites so far. We have loosely organized the games into three categories: Action Games, Puzzle Games, and Two-Player Games (i.e. you against the computer).

For some fun and free PC games, see our Fun, Free Educational Computer Games for Kids website.

Action Games

A Turbulent Christmas
http://freewareppc.com/games/aturbulentchristmas.shtml

Santa hit some turbulence in his sleigh, and all of the presents tumbled to the ground. Use your buttons or stylus to move Santa around the playing field, collecting the presents and avoiding the hazards before the timer runs out.

Aquella Ball
http://freewareppc.com/games/aquelaball.shtml

Use your stylus to trap bouncing balls on the game board by drawing horizontal or vertical lines to divide the board into smaller and smaller sections. If a ball touches your line before it's fully drawn then you lose a life. Each time you successfully draw a line across the game board, the section of the board which does not contain any balls will disappear. When you have removed 75% or more of the board then you go to the next level.

Ball Breaker
http://www.xflib.net/index.php?action=games&name=BallBreaker

Use your stylus to drag a tiny dot around the screen. One or more balls are attracted to that dot, and your goal is to use this attraction to cause all of the balls to crash into the small white block(s). If your tiny dot touches anything then the game is over.

Click.Ball
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.mobi/download-click-ball-v1-0.html

There are two simple rules: Tap the moving white ball, and don't tap a black ball. It's easy at first, but it quickly becomes challenging.

Crazy Ball 3D
http://www.pocketgear.com/en_US/html/display_product.jsp?id=prod5701271

An interesting 3D Pong game. Tap the Start button, select the difficulty levels, then tap Go. Drag the white square (your paddle) to hit the ball.

Danger Zone
http://www.xflib.net/index.php?action=games&name=DangerZone

Drag the black and yellow "radiation" symbol around the screen, avoiding all of the moving obstacles for as long as you can.

Distant Galaxies
http://freewareppc.com/games/distantgalaxies.shtml

A nice vertical shooter. Use your buttons to shoot up at the enemies, avoiding their shots and collecting powerups.

DoubleSkill
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-doubleskill.html

In the top section of the game board, use the paddle to keep the ball in the air. In the bottom section, keep the ball on the "see-saw." The tricky part is that you're doing both at the same time with your stylus. The large 0 in the screenshot is the timer. The longer you keep the balls in motion, the higher your score. A quick game of reflexes.

Helicopter
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.mobi/download-helicopter.html

Touching the screen with your stylus raises the helicopter, and releasing the stylus lowers the helicopter. Avoid the obstacles. Simple graphics and simple gameplay for a quick game of reflexes.

ICBM
http://www.geoff.org.uk/fognog/icbm.htm

A nice Missile Command clone. As the enemy ICBMs are dropping from above, tap near them with your stylus to shoot them from your three turrets at the bottom. You have a limited number of shots, and the game is over when all six of your cities are destroyed. The first few levels are fairly easy, but then it becomes quite challenging.

Isitar
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-isitar-v1-0.html

An infinite parade of lemmings enters each level, and your goal is to get 30 of them safely to the exit. If you tap your stylus on the first icon at the bottom left of the screen and then tap a lemming, it will turn into a ladder (which the other lemmings will start climbing). If you select the second icon and tap a lemming, it will turn into a stone (for blocking other lemmings so that they don't fall into a trap). If you select the third icon and tap a lemming, it will explode (blowing up some things around it). This is useful for creating holes in walls, for example, to let the remaining lemmings escape through. If you select the fourth icon and tap a lemming, then all of the lemmings will explode. After you get the proper number of lemmings safely through the exit then a message will appear saying that enough lemmings have escaped. Now you can use the fourth icon to blow up the remaining lemmings and end the level. If a lemming steps on a thorn or is killed by an enemy, then the number of leaves (displayed at the bottom) will decrease. If the leaves go down to 0 then you have lost that level. If a lemming picks up an apple then it will turn red, and it can destroy enemies. Tap the edge of the screen to scroll the screen.

JumpyBall
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-jumpyball.html

Similar to SkyRoads. Use your buttons to control a ball traveling down a track, jumping over obstacles and holes.

Kevtris
http://www.caywen.com/kevtris/

A nice Tetris clone with a variety of features. Use your buttons to rotate the falling shapes so that they will fill in entire rows. When a row is filled in then it disappears. If the shapes pile up to the top of the screen then the game is over.

Operation Nutcracker
http://pocketnow.com/review/first-look-operation-nutcracker

A spy-themed game set in the future. Use your buttons or stylus to operate a remote-control bomb-sniffing device in order to locate a bomb in the Russian Federation embassy in London. Stealth is important due to the wall-mounted cameras and lasers and traps, etc., and you can collect gadgets such as infrared goggles to help you sneak through the embassy. We're not very familiar with this game, but it looks promising.

PocketGravity
http://www.xflib.net/index.php?action=games&name=PocketGravity

Draw rectangles and circles, and attach them together with pins and string, and see how they interact with each other and with gravity. At the bottom of the screen, the icons have the following meanings:

  • We refer to this as the "Draw menu," and this menu has the follow options:
    • Select this to draw rectangles in the drawing area. There are two types of rectangles (the same button will toggle between these two icons):
      • Select this to draw white rectangles which are affected by gravity.
      • Select this to draw red rectangles which are not affected by gravity.
    • Select this to draw circles in the drawing area. Just like with rectangles, you can draw white circles which are affected by gravity or red circles which are not affected by gravity.
    • Select this to copy an item. When the "Copy" icon is selected, then drag an existing rectangle or circle in the drawing area to create a copy of it.
    • Select this to pin objects together. For example, if you overlap two rectangles in the drawing area and then place a pin where they overlap, then the rectangles will be joined at that point and can spin around each other where they are pinned together. If you drag a pin from the inside of a rectangle out to the drawing area, then there will be a pin inside the rectangle and a pin in the "wall" with a string between the two pins (strings are stiff, they don't bend). The rectangle will dangle on the string. If you drag a pin from the inside of a rectangle to the inside of another rectangle, then both rectangles will have a pin in them with a string between the pins. There are two options for drawing a pin (the same button will toggle between these two icons):
      • When this icon is selected, the pins will appear exactly where you tap the stylus.
      • When this icon is selected, the pins will appear in the center of the rectangle or circle that you tap.
  • We refer to this as the "Change menu," and this menu has the follow options:
    • Select this to move items around in the drawing area.
    • Select this to rotate rectangles in the drawing area.
    • Select this to delete items in the drawing area.
  • We refer to this as the "Save menu," and this menu has the follow options:
    • Tap the "Save menu" icon, then drag up and to the left until you're on this icon. When you lift up the stylus, everything in the drawing area will be deleted.
    • Tap the "Save menu" icon, then drag up and to the left until you're on this icon. When you lift up the stylus, you can save your drawing in a new file by tapping the "New File" picture which appears in the top left corner. This will create a new file called Scene000.pgs (in the folder which contains PocketGravity.exe). You can also over-write an existing file by tapping its picture instead of tapping the "New File" picture. To cancel without saving, click the yellow background area.
    • Tap the "Save menu" icon, then drag up until you're on this icon. When you lift up the stylus, some thumbnail images of saved drawings will appear, and you can load a drawing by tapping its picture. If you have more than 25 files, tap the arrow icon at the bottom of the screen to go to the next page of images. To cancel without loading, click the yellow background area.
  • Drag this scrollbar up or down to decrease or increase the force of gravity. The textbox at the bottom of the screen shows the gravity value (the default value is 60).
  • This is the Activate/Pause button (the same button will toggle between these two icons):
    • Select this to activate your drawing so that the white rectangles and circles begin moving around under the influence of gravity. If the "Move" icon is selected then you can drag things around while the drawing is active. If the "Rectangle" or "Circle" icon is selected then you can draw rectangles or circles while the drawing is active.
    • Select this to pause the action.
  • This is the Undo button.
  • This is the Redo button.

Pocket Guss
http://www.teknowmagic.net/snake.html

A basic "snake" game. Use your buttons to move the snake, eating all of the apples. After each level is finished, a password is displayed (which you need to write down somewhere) so that next time you can pick up where you left off.

Pocket Life
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-pocket-life-v2-2.html

An implementation of the game of Life (invented by John Horton Conway), with lots of pre-defined shapes.

Pocket Sand
http://manuel.bit-fire.com/2006/11/03/pocketsand-v08-released/

A nice Falling Sand clone. After searching online and playing with the different features, here are our observations.

  • The blue stream of particles falling from the top is water.
  • The tan stream is sand.
  • The white stream is salt.
  • The brown stream is oil.
The icons have the following meanings:
  • Select this to make water droplets fall wherever you tap.
  • Select this to make acid droplets fall wherever you tap.
  • Select this to make fire embers fly up wherever you tap.
  • Select this to draw a metal wall.
  • Select this to draw a "fire emitter."
  • Select this to draw a "water emitter."
  • Select this to make sand particles fall wherever you tap.
  • Select this to make oil droplets fall wherever you tap.
  • Select this to make salt particles fall wherever you tap.
  • Select this to draw a wall of ice.
  • Select this to draw grass.
Here's how the above items interact with each other:
  • Water will pool up on top of just about everything, and just about everything will sit on top of water. The exceptions are that water will melt ice, and water makes grass grow, and steam rises up when water falls onto fire.
  • Acid dissolves everything except metal and water.
  • Fire burns up grass and oil, and melts ice, and is destroyed by acid.
  • Metal is not affected by anything.
  • Sand smothers fire, and is destroyed by acid.
  • Oil is burned by fire, and is destroyed by acid.
  • Salt smothers fire, and melts ice, and is destroyed by acid.
  • Ice is melted by fire or salt or water, and is destroyed by acid.
  • Grass grows with water, and is burned up by fire, and is destroyed by acid.

The screenshots show a contraption that I made which demonstrates some of the interactions:

  • At the top of the second screenshot, a metal wall directs all of the falling particles off to the right, creating an open area below the wall. Below this there's a metal wall with a sharp corner in it, and below that there's another small metal wall. A piece of ice plugs up the space between these two metal walls. Below this there's a small fire emitter and a large area of grass. The grassy area encloses a space which is filled with a dangerous white chemical (okay, it's really just salt) that needs to be destroyed. Beneath the grassy area there's a curved ice wall, followed by a metal bowl filled with acid. To the right, water continually rains down from a water emitter.

  • To start up the contraption, we just need to place a fire emitter underneath the water emitter (see the third screenshot). The water falling onto the fire creates grey steam, which rises up until it's trapped by the metal wall. The steam travels up the side of the metal wall and gathers in the corner, where it cools off and begins to fall like rain. This water pools up on top of the plug of ice until it melts the ice and falls onto the grassy area. The water causes the grass to grow until it touches the fire emitter, which sets the grass on fire and releases the dangerous white chemical. The dangerous white chemical falls onto the ice wall, then melts through the ice and falls into the bowl of acid, where it's destroyed (see the fourth screenshot).

Porta-Pinball
http://download.chip.eu/en/Porta-Pinball-1.04_83374.html

A decent pinball game.

Realms
http://realms.en.softonic.com/pocketpc

A nice Asteroids-type game, but with a twist. You are given missions to complete and you earn money to use for equipping your ship with better shields, weapons, and so on. We're not very familiar with this game, but it looks promising.

Space Invaders
http://freewareppc.com/games/spaceinvaders.shtml

A nice Space Invaders clone. Use your buttons to move back and forth at the bottom of the screen, shooting up at the aliens and avoiding their bombs.

TouchSnake
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-touchsnake.html

A tricky "snake" game. In Normal mode, the snake continually turns left if the stylus is touching the left side of the screen. The snake continually turns right if the stylus is touching the right side of the screen. The closer to the edge you touch, the tighter the turn that the snake will make. In Attractive mode, the snake moves toward the stylus if the stylus is near the snake's head. In Repulsive mode, the snake moves away from the stylus if the stylus is near the snake's head.

X-Mas Runner Lite
http://www.ballshooter.com/games/?prod_id=34

A nice Lode Runner clone with a Christmas theme. Use your stylus or buttons to run around the screen, collecting the candy canes, gadgets, etc., and avoiding the enemies. Tap an ice block next to you (or use your "action" button) to make a hole in the ice. This will allow you to drop through the hole, or you can trap an enemy in the hole. The enemy will get stuck in the hole for awhile, and you can run across its head. After a few moments, the holes will regenerate back to solid ice. You can't make holes in concrete.

Xplodus
http://www.clickgamer.com/moreinfo.htm?pid=913§ion=PPC

Use your buttons or stylus to move Pete around each room. Tap on Pete (or use your "action" button) to place a bomb, then move away before the bomb blows up. Blow up the walls and aliens to find powerups and extra points, then find the exit before the time runs out.
